SINGAPORE: Singapore’s main shopping districts at Orchard Road and Marina Bay will once again be lit in a dazzling display of lights for the Christmas season.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said celebratory events and lifestyle experiences, as well as an array of fun-filled activities and exciting entertainment options, had been lined up for visitors from Saturday till January 2 next year.
A much-anticipated highlight is the street light-ups, and STB said this year’s display promises to be even better under the overarching theme of “Starlit Celebrations” at Orchard Road and Marina Bay.
Orchard Road will be lit to the theme ‘Starlit Christmas’ where different coloured zones would enliven the atmosphere and lifestyle experience along Singapore’s premier shopping precinct.
And for the first time, some visitors will even get a chance to switch on the lights at Orchard.
Rose Tong, Chairperson, Christmas Light-Up Subcommittee, Baywatch Association, said: “This year Christmas at Marina Bay will be much more splendid simply because we have a lot more developments and attractions for all visitors to Marina Bay.
“With the completion of the 3.5km water promenade, the helix bridge, and of course Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resorts,
Customs House, Marina Bay Link Mall, the Financial Centre and with residents living in the city centre, they will all bring about the hype and the vibrance and all the excitement.”
Members of the public can also vote via SMS for the ‘Best Dressed Building Contest.’
Eleven buildings along the 2.2 km stretch of Orchard Road will compete for prizes worth S$170,000.
STB said about 6.3 million people celebrated ‘Christmas in the Tropics’ last year, visiting both Orchard Road and Marina Bay.
This was a slight increase in visitor arrivals compared to 2008.
